“…The results presented here also showed that in the presence of IAA, both naphthoquinones at 1000 µM induced a 30% lower increase in HCF III reduction by the maize coleoptile segments compared to variant without auxin. In trying to explain this finding, we assumed that auxin, which is able to change the fluidity of the lipid systems and weaken the interactions between their components (De Melo et al 2004;Celik et al 2006) may disturb the integration of naphthoquinones into the plasma membrane (hypothesis proposed by Lüthje et al 1992) and subsequently decrease HCF III reduction. It should also be added that IAA alone stimulated HCF III reduction as was previously shown by Lekacz and Karcz (2006).…”

“…36,21 Studies have shown a down-regulation of gene expression for antioxidant enzymes from animals supplemented with antioxidant, 37 accompanied by no alteration in morphologic and biochemistry parameters. 38 On the other hand, additional studies have pointed out that a decreased enzyme activity in response to oxidative stress may accompany an initial exposure to xenobiotic, which can be followed by an induction of the antioxidant system.…”

“…21,22 Experimental protocol Thirty-two animals were divided equally into four groups with eight animals each. The control group received only PBS and the other three groups received IAA at: 50 (T 50 ), 250 T 250 ), and 500 (T 500 ) mg Kg À1 of body mass per day.…”

“…The effect of IAA on antioxidant enzymes is mostly concerned with animals. De Melo et al (2004) reported that rat neutrophils and lymphocytes in the presence of IAA (1 mM) increased the activities of SOD, CAT and glutathione peroxidase, which could be an attempt at self-protection.…”
