The type and quantity of filler influences the property of the asphalt mix. The filler quantity, similar to fine and coarser aggregates, is typically specified in proportions of weight. If the specific gravity of the filler is significantly different than the rest of the aggregates (for example, alternative fillers derived from industrial and domestic wastes), weight proportioning may lead to undesirably low or high quantity of filler in the mix. To investigate this issue further, in the present work filler concentration (in terms of percentage area occupancy) is studied at the microscopic level with the help of a scanning electron microscope. Three different types of fillers are chosen and are separately added to asphalt mix in varying proportions. The indirect tensile strength values and the corresponding filler concentration levels of these samples are noted. From limited data gathered in the present study, it appears that the average filler concentration values corresponding to the maximum indirect tensile strength levels for the mixes are statistically same. That means, even though optimum filler quantities (by weight) are different for these three mixes, the filler concentration values are almost the same. Subsequently, design chart is suggested to estimate the optimum quantity (by weight) of filler for asphalt mix for any given type of filler.

Abstract. According to the relationship between gradation and proportion of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and design gradation of recycled mixture, the authors discussed the influence of proportion of RAP on gradation adjustment of recycled mixture. And then, recycled mixture with 0%, 30%, 50%, 70% of RAP were made, and Influence of proportion of RAP on high and low temperature performance, water stability and anti-aging performance of recycled mixture were discussed. The results and analysis indicate that gradation of recycled mixture would not be adjusted to aiming gradation if proportion of RAP was too big. With the increase of proportion of RAP, high temperature performance and anti-aging performance of recycled mixture enhanced, but low temperature performance and water stability decayed sharply. In practical application, reasonable proportion of RAP should be determined according to gradation, performance demand and economy of recycled mixture.

e recycling and reuse of waste materials is a topic of global concern and great international interest for those interested in sustainable development and protecting the environment. In recent decades, global production of construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) has signi cantly increased and became a worldwide problem. is research proposes to evaluate the feasibility of using aggregate from recycled C&D waste for urban road embankment applications based on the Sanhuan road construction project in eastern Xi'an. An extensive suite of laboratory and eld compaction tests were carried out to determine the physical properties and engineering characteristics of the C&D waste. e e ect of curing on the strength of the C&D waste was investigated using uncon ned compression strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), and de ection tests. e results show that the C&D waste has the characteristics of high strength and signi cant stability after simple treatment and further suggest that the use of these materials for paving urban road embankments is feasible. is study is of value for the reasonable and e ective promotion of using C&D waste recycled materials in road subgrade applications.
