“…Early winged insects diversified into two main clades, the Neoptera (of which stoneflies are a relatively basal group) and the Paleoptera, which are represented in modern forms by mayflies (Ephemeroptera) and dragonflies (Odonata). Like stoneflies, all extant Paleoptera have aquatic immature stages, deposit their eggs on or near the surface of water, and, with the exception of modern dragonflies, have very similar water-resistant hairs on their wings (3,37). A recent examination of wings and thoraces of fossil mayflies from the Carboniferous and Permian revealed that they appear to have had greatly reduced flight ability (14).…”

“…Prosopistoma pennigerum was recorded to fly for only about 30 minutes after its emergence at dawn (Fontaine 1982), in June and July (Vayssie´re 1881; Fontaine 1955Fontaine , 1982Degrange 1955). The females of this species are known to be reproductive as subimago (Edmunds and McCafferty 1988). Emergence at dawn is likely to be a family trait, because it is also described for P. africanum (Gillies 1954) and P. pearsonorum (Campbell and Hubbard 1998).…”

“…Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are an order of benthic macroinvertebrates inhabiting freshwaters, known as the most primitive and ancient lineage among extant winged insects (Pterygota) (Edmunds and McCafferty, 1988;Brittain and Sartori, 2003). They are distributed worldwide and encompass over 3000 species, ca.…”
