The long-term efficacy of a behavioral parent training intervention for families with 2-year-olds

Abstract: The effectiveness of a behavioral parent training (BPT) intervention for improving maternal self-efficacy, maternal stress, and the quality of mother-toddler interactions has been demonstrated (Gross, Fogg, & Tucker, 1995). The 1-year follow-up of the 46 parents of toddlers (assigned to an intervention or comparison group) who participated in that study is reported. Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). “…The effects of the current training procedure on increasing parental self-efficacy may explain why all mothers rated the intervention to be effective despite issues with the implementation of the procedures (i.e., the need to incorporate an error correction procedure and failure to generalize to sessions with children was observed). This is consistent with previous research which has demonstrated parent training to be effective at increasing parental self-efficacy (Bloomfield & Kendall, 2012;Sofronoff & Farbotko, 2002;Tucker et al, 1998).
