Given raised rates of patient suicide and violence in secure psychiatric facilities, staff in such settings are arguably at increased risk for burnout and reduced mental health. The present paper responds to the recent UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) call to assess workforce well-being. This paper held the following aims: (1) to quantify existing levels of mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety, distress, and post-traumatic stress) and subjective well-being (i.e., job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and four domains of burnout), and (2) to evaluate Coping Self-Efficacy (CSE) and Need for Affect (NFA) as factors associated with staff mental health and subjective well-being. We conducted a voluntary crosssectional health needs assessment of forensic mental health staff (N=170) between 2017 and 2018 from one National Health Service (NHS) Trust. Descriptive findings suggest staff possessed non-clinical average ranges of mental health symptoms. Subjective well-being findings showed burnout was relatively low, whereas job and life satisfaction were modest. Regression models demonstrated that: (a) thought/emotion stopping beliefs were negatively associated with psychological exhaustion; (b) social support beliefs were positively associated with life satisfaction and job enthusiasm; (c) NFA Avoidance was linked with poor mental health and burnout, and; (d) NFA Approach was positively associated with two health subjective well-being indicators. Overall, assessment results suggest NHS forensic mental health staff reported relatively good health. Cognitive-and emotion-focused coping beliefs demonstrate promise as content for prevention programming. Using Emotional Labour Theory, we offer psychological services-based recommendations for future prevention programming and research.

Purpose: Health disparities have been identified between groups of diverse young sexual minority women (SMW) and heterosexual women. This approach may generate sufficient group sizes for statistical analyses but obscures important differences. Moreover, some young women may not identify as ''lesbian'' or ''bisexual'' but somewhere in between. This study examined health and sexual minority identity-specific outcomes among three groups of SMW-women who identify as ''exclusively lesbian,'' ''mostly lesbian,'' and ''bisexual.'' Methods: Participants were 990 young (18-30 years old) SMW (exclusively lesbian: n = 305, mostly lesbian: n = 133, bisexual: n = 552) who completed an online survey, including information about mental and physical health symptoms, hazardous drinking, and identity uncertainty. Those who reported alcohol use in the past 30 days responded to questions about their alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences. Results: Controlling for demographic differences, health outcomes varied significantly by identity. Mostly lesbian and bisexual women reported the most depression, anxiety, and physical health symptoms; mostly lesbian women reported the highest levels of hazardous drinking. Among those who reported drinking, mostly lesbian women drank the most frequently and reported the most alcohol-related consequences. Mostly lesbian women reported the most identity uncertainty. Conclusion: Mostly lesbian women were similar to bisexual women on several health outcomes. They appear unique, however, in drinking behavior and identity uncertainty. Collapsing across identities in health research may affect outcomes.

The profession of counseling values honoring diversity and promoting social justice. These core values pertain to all aspects of the counseling profession, including the production of scholarship. Given that all research affects and is affected by cultural dynamics, we posit that all research is multicultural research. Additionally, research is a system composed of multiple parties including researchers, participants, reviewers, and readers, each with unique cultural identities and norms. Therefore, whether acknowledged or not, dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and culture permeate all aspects of counseling research. This article is dedicated to dismantling myths related to multicultural research; providing examples of high‐quality, culturally responsive research; and detailing considerations for each step of the research process to promote multicultural competence and advocacy. We aim to help counseling researchers embrace their role as multicultural scholars and improve the quality and impact of culturally responsive research.
