The Jargon of Pedal Movements

Abstract: The lack of unambiguous descriptions in the research literature may mean that clinicians are not always applying treatment options in an appropriate manner. Greater clarity of meaning is required for both basic research and clinical applications.

“…Figure 1 shows the three clearest movement patterns that were identified. In response to the inversion-eversion driving action the cuboid rotates as much as 25° about an oblique axis – a movement best described as obvolution-involution [ 4 ]. The same driving action also produces up to 2 mm of posterior-anterior translation – an actual distraction of the synovial joint.…”

“…The same driving action also produces up to 2 mm of posterior-anterior translation – an actual distraction of the synovial joint. The medial-lateral driving action produced a 6° rotational response about a differently oriented oblique axis, in a movement best described as obversion-reversion [ 4 ]. No distinctive movements were produced as a response to the plantarflexion-dorsiflexion driving action.…”

“…To further evaluate the strength during the movement, we additionally extracted the torque produced across the range of motion (ROM) in steps of 5° starting from 20° of supination until 10° of pronation, since this active ROM was achieved by all participants. According to the most widely used definitions in the literature, for the purpose of this study, the most appropriate definitions of the movement around the ankle joint were supination and pronation even though internal and external rotation as well as eversion and inversion were naturally part of the motion [ 38 , 39 ].…”
