The Interaction of Plasma Sialylated and Desialylated Lipoproteins with Collagen from the Intima and Media of Uninvolved and Atherosclerotic Human Aorta

Abstract: We have evaluated the binding of sialylated and desialylated lipoproteins to collagen isolated from the proteoglycan and musculoelastic layers of intima and media of uninvolved human aorta and atherosclerotic lesions. Comparing various collagen preparations from the uninvolved intima-media, the binding of sialylated apoB-containing lipoproteins was best to collagen from the intimal PG-rich layer. Binding of sialylated apoB-containing lipoproteins to collagen from this layer of fatty streak and fibroatheroma wa… Show more

“…), which take place extracellularly via enzymatic and non enzy matic reactions [26 28]. These modifications are facili tated by the retention of LDL in sub endothelial space due to interaction with components of extracellular matrix [30]. One can speculate that higher expression of LDLR in aortal intima in women compared to men can promote quicker uptake of LDL by cells, thus hindering atherogenic modifications of LDL.…”

“…LDL forms complexes with components isolated from human aortic intima, namely: cellular debris, collagen, elastin and proteoglycans [39][40][41]. Multiple-modifi ed LDL as a part of these complexes has an increased ability to induce intracellular lipid accumulation.…”
