Background: Less energy consumption and more efficient use of fossil-fueled technologies are among the sustainable energy targets of modern societies. The essential activities to be achieved under these objectives are to increase the distributed generation structures and increase their applicability. The distributed generation (DG) is a small-scale version of the traditional power grid, which is supported by micro turbines, hydrogen fuel cells, wind turbines, photovoltaic (PV) modules, combine heat and power systems, and energy storage units. Methods: The aim of this research is to detail performance analyze and unit sizing of proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC)-based grid-connected distributed generation system with the help of empirical calculations. To this end, we tried to establish the system and analyze the performance of reliable operation of the system with experimental verifications.Results and Conclusions: The results demonstrate the situation of annual production about how much rated power can be generated through the real meteorological data to dispatch the power to the constant variable loads. While, 53.56% of the total energy demand is met by the utility grid, 46.44% of the demand is met by the produced energy i.e., from microgrid. The PEMFC based hybrid microgrid at Marmara University, Faculty of Technology was analyzed in detail in this study. According to the results of the performance analysis, the important points that will be highlighted and will help the researchers working in this field are as follows. Our results are encouraging and can be validated by a larger sample size with the fine weather conditions in terms of the percentage of procurement of energy.

Optimisation framework for the design and operation of open-market urban and remote community microgrids

In this article, a new business model considering multiple stakeholders is proposed to develop a framework for third-party investment and future flexible retail electricity market in community microgrids. The proposed two-stage optimisation platform generates opportunities for multiple stakeholders to invest in the design of community microgrids, comprising multiple and different distributed energy resources such as renewable generation units, battery energy storage systems, and micro diesel engines, to minimize daily operational costs of the system. To proliferate the prosumers in retail energy markets as per the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, United Kingdom, a peer-to-peer energy trading and energy management scheme is also proposed. The optimal sizing of urban and remote community microgrids are determined in stage-1, followed by their optimal operations to minimise the daily operating cost of the community system in stage-2. An improved version of the genetic algorithm is employed to optimise decision variables in both the stages. Different cases are investigated which show the tremendous potential of revenue generation for all stakeholders while effectively optimizing techno-economic operations of microgrids.

Seeking continuous development, a modern community must also be able to adapt to future possible challenges using constrained or limited resources. As a revolutionary communication paradigm, the Internet of Things (IoT) empowers the cutting-edge and emerging applications which enable manifold new intelligent services towards a smart community. The sophisticated ecosystem of a digital community is made feasible by the IoT infrastructure, which also provides community control with access to a wealth of actual data. In addition, IoT platforms empower the ubiquitous computing ability, providing more potentials to the actuators in perception layer in the IoT architecture.With more and more population in the urban areas, sustainability issues have become a key factor to consider in the development of a digital community. We give a modern survey in this study on the most recent developments in IoT for sustainable digital communities. After carefully examining the most recent literature, we specifically highlight the various smart digital community application scenarios, such as smart buildings, energy management, green transportation, trash management, etc. We also look into a number of major issues facing the use of IoT technology in digital communities. Furthermore, we discuss potential future applications and future research areas for IoT, the critical component of sustainable digital communities.
