Abstract:Enterprise architecture originates from the 1980's. It emerged among ICT practitioners to solve complex problems related to information systems. Currently EA is also utilised to solve business problems, although the focus is still in ICT and its alignment with business. EA can be defined as a description of the current and future states of the enterprise, and as a change between these states to meet stakeholder's goals. Despite its popularity and 30 years of age, the literature review conducted on top information and management science journals revealed that EA is still lacking the sound theoretical foundation. In this conceptual paper, we propose General Systems Theory (GST) for underpinning theory of EA. GST allows us to see enterprises as systems of systems consisting of, for instance, social organisations, humans, information systems and computers. This explains why EA can be used to describe the enterprise and its components, and how to control them to execute the managed change. Implications to science and practice, and some directions for future research are also provided.

Summary. Four patients with Candida parapsilosis endophthalmitis following intraocular lens implantation were treated with oral fluconazole. All had failed prior therapy with intravitreal amphotericin B. The only patient who had the lens implant removed was cured after treatment with fluconazole for one year. Three patients who did not have the lens implant removed had resolution of symptoms and return of visual acuity towards normal during the year they were on fluconazole. However, five months after therapy had been stopped, all three had decreasing visual acuity, and in two, culture of vitreous fluid yielded C. parapsilosis. Fluconazole may be effective for treatment of endophthalmitis associated with an intraocular lens implant, but only when the implant is removed also. Zusammenfassung. Vier Patienten mit Candida parapsilosis‐Endophthalmitis nach intraokulärer Linsenimplantation wurden oral mit Fluconazol behandelt. Rei allen Patienten hatte die vorherige intravitreale Amphotericin B‐Therapie versagt. Einem Patienten wurde die implantierte Linse entfernt; er war nach einjähriger Fluconazol‐Therapie geheilt. Den drei ande‐ren Patienten wurde die implantierte Linse nicht entfernt. Unter einjähriger Fluconazol‐Therapie besserten sich zwar die Symptome, und die Sehschärfe normalisierte sich. Fünf Monate nach Beendigung der Therapie verschlechterte sich jedoch bei allen drei Patienten die Sehfähigkeit wieder, und bei zwei von ihnen konnte aus der Glaskorperflussigkeit wieder C. parapsilosis isoliert werden. Fluconazol kann also bei Endophthalmitis nach Linsenimplantation wirksam sein, jedoch nur wenn das Implantat wieder entfernt wird.

Conceptual Model of Enterprise Architecture Management

Enterprise architecture (EA) is a description of an enterprise from an integrated business and IT perspective. Enterprise architecture management (EAM) is a management practice embracing all the management processes related to EA aiming to improve business and IT alignment. EAM is typically described as a sequential four-step process: (i) document the current state, (ii) describe the desired future state, (iii) develop the transition plan and (iv) implement the plan. This traditional four-step approach to EAM essentially defines the modern understanding of EA. Based on a literature review, this paper demonstrates that this four-step approach to EAM, though practiced by some companies, is inadequate as a model explaining the EAM phenomenon in general. As a substitute, this paper synthesizes the generic conceptual model of EAM providing a more realistic conceptualization of EAM describing it as a decentralized network of independent but interacting processes, artifacts and actors.
