Abstract: While a plane is maneuvering before take-off and landing, some solid particles (e.g. sand, dust, soil) may get into the engine with air. A vast majority of them are stopped by the compressor blades, but the smaller ones can get into a hot part of the engine and cause erosion. A pneumatic laboratory work station was built in order to investigate the impact of foreign object damage (FOD) particles with a diameter of 4 mm. Cylindrical samples with a diameter of 30 mm were used, each having a thermal barrier coati… Show more

“…It was found that the impact perpendicular to the surface is the most dangerous [80]. Rahaman et al [81] observed that a modulated TBC structure can better withstand impact damage. As shown in Figure 10, the results showed that cracks mainly occurred along the lamellar interface, the visible delamination of TBC observed near the edge of coating.…”

“…In 2014, this proportion changed, and the use of aluminum dropped to 20% while there was an increase in the use of composites of up to 52%. However, further expansion of PMCs is limited due to their properties, such as low resistance to elevated temperatures and fire, low erosion resistance, and tendency to cracking and delamination under quasi-static or dynamic loading [1,2]. Such disadvantages can be eliminated to some extent by applying various multifunctional coatings on their surface.…”

“…They operate with the same operation principle of all the conventional gas turbines; therefore, the efficiency of these devices depends on the gas temperature, which can become higher than 1000 K [2] and [3]. Blades and nozzles of the turbines are subjected to different loads like high temperature, corrosion, centrifugal forces, etc., which could lead to failures [4] and [5]. Regarding high temperature, one of the main drawbacks of GMTs is their small size, which augments heat transfer among their components, leading to failures by burning out or highly stressed zones.…”

“…Non-uniform temperature fields were obtained, and zones with high stress were detected at the suction and the leading edge of the blade. In another study, it was shown that the impact of foreign object damage (FOD) could cause erosion on blade samples with TBC, and was most dangerous as it becomes perpendicular to the surface [5]. Several materials have been developed to be used as TBC and studies have been performed to compare their effectiveness of substrate protection.…”
