“…In previous studies, both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes have been investigated for CO 2 electrolysis. [15,17,[69][70][71][72] For aqueous electrolytes, the most commonly used electrolyte is a 0.1M -0.5M NaHCO 3 or KHCO 3 solution with a pH value of 7 after CO 2 saturation. [15,26,43] The pH value is considered for CO 2 electrolysis due to the suppression of undesired hydrogen evolution reaction.…”

“…Aqueous electrolytes other than bicarbonate have also been studied. [71][72][73][74][75] Both Lister and Kenis studied the influences of electrolyte in CO 2 electrolysis and concluded that a KOH electrolyte with a high pH value is favorable for CO 2 electrolysis compared to KCl or K 2 SO 4 based electrolytes. [73][74][75] The superior performance of KOH electrolyte is likely due to the favorable anion absorption on the electrode surface and/or the reduced overpotential of the anode.…”

“…Electrolytes are also important for electrolyzer performance and influence the activities, selectivities, and the overpotentials required . Approaches based on engineering electrolytes could be a way to bring the eCO 2 RR to CO closer to feasibility at scale.…”

“…Many studies have focused on understanding how different alkali metals‐based aqueous electrolytes interact with the catalyst and reaction intermediates at the electrode‐electrolyte interface. Several experimental and computational studies have investigated the role of cations and anions that make up the electrolyte on eCO 2 RR performance. Anion effects are interpreted on the basis of specific adsorption and/or pH, whereas cation effects are explained using promoter effects, Frumkin effects, cation hydrolysis, and electrical double layer (EDL) stabilization .…”

“…One solution that has received much attention in current research is CO 2 reduction into products that can be used as alternatives to fossil fuels. A variety of photochemical, electrophotochemical, and electrochemical methods have been proposed for CO 2 reduction [3][4][5]. However, a growing interest has been recently shown to electrochemical methods on grounds of their following advantages [1].…”
