The Influence of Dietary Factors on the Gut Microbiota

Abstract: There is increasing evidence that diet influences the relationship between gut microbiota and individual health outcomes. Nutrient intake affects the composition of the gut microbial community and provides metabolites that influence the host physiology. Dietary patterns, including macronutrient balance and feeding/fasting cycles which may be manipulated with dietary regimens based on caloric restriction periods, influence the gut homeostasis through its impact on the microbial ecosystem. Along the same line, p… Show more

“…Nutritional intake affects the composition of the gut microbial community and the physiological metabolism of the host ( 36 ). Both lipid and carbohydrate metabolism ( 37 , 38 ) and VFAs ( 10 ) can provide energy, while amino acid synthesis requires energy ( 39 ).…”

“…Changes to the microbiota due to stressors such as husbandry factors, feed additives, and environmental changes are also important components for understanding dynamics in the poultry microbiome (Feye et al, 2020; Kers et al, 2018; Yadav & Jha, 2019). There is evidence suggesting that different production systems and dietary regimes have a pronounced effect on the composition and diversity of the microbial community within poultry (Apajalahti et al, 2001; Chen, X. et al, 2020; Nova et al, 2022). This includes shifts in major phyla present as well as particular genera associated with health outcomes (Biasato et al, 2019a; Biasato et al, 2019b).…”

“…All are characterized by circadian rhythms (Zheng et al., 2020). Evidence suggests that the host influences daily changes in intestine microbiota thru circadian mechanisms and dietary habits (Nova et al., 2022). Although there is a bright and dark signal, the expression of biological clock genes is impaired in germ‐free mice; however, the intestinal flora of normal mice shows different daily changes due to dietary composition (Zarrinpar et al., 2014).…”
