The influence of chlorine in indoor swimming pools on the composition of breathing phase of professional swimmers

Abstract: Objectives: Swimming is one of the most popular forms of physical activity. Pool water is cleaned with chlorine, which -in combination with compounds contained in water -could form chloramines and trichloromethane in the swimmer's lungs. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of swimming training in an indoor pool on the composition of swimmers' respiratory phase metabolomics, and develop a system to provide basic information about its impact on the swimmer's airway mucosa metabolism, which cou… Show more

“…However, most of the time mild amounts of chlorine inhalation are self-limiting and do not warrant any specific treatment. 14 After thorough literature review regarding chlorine inhalation-induced acute lung injury, ARDS is a rare manifestation in clinical practice. The outcomes of mild chlorine gas inhalation have been reported to be generally good, having a low mortality rate (0.58%).…”

“…The thickening of these walls indicated inflammation and impaired lung function. Alveoli, responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide during breathing, play a crucial role in this process [38]. When alveoli collapse, it signifies a severe impairment in the lung's ability to efficiently exchange gases, resulting in breathing difficulties.…”

“…This risk can be deemed unsatisfactory and requires improvement. Attendance at chlorinated swimming pools has been linked to an increased risk of asthma and allergy illnesses in kids and teenagers, according to a number of population studies [ 13 , 14 ]. The majority of earlier studies calculated disinfection byproduct exposures based on questionnaire- or environmental-monitoring-reported swimming frequency, which was prone to exposure misclassification because it did not take into account variables that might affect individual intake and disinfection byproduct metabolism [ 15 ].…”
