The incidence and treatment of asymptomatic, unruptured cerebral aneurysms

Abstract: The importance of early detection by various radiological techniques of asymptomatic, unruptured aneurysms as a means of preventing subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is discussed in this report. Four hundred volunteers underwent clinical and radiological evaluations between March, 1988, and September, 1992. Studies included a neurological examination as well as digital subtraction cerebral angiography via a femoral arterial catheter, computerized tomography, T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of t… Show more

“…Hyperplastic AchA means a well developed AchA which retains its anatomical location of origin, but has long courses and many choroidal branches. Hyperplastic AchA is known to be associated with an increased occurrence of aneurysm formation (4%~17%) in comparison with incidentally found overall AchA aneurysm (0.4%~0.5%) 1,2,9 . The causes of the higher occurrence rate can be explained as follows.…”

“…Unruptured intracranial aneurysms are relatively common, occurring in 2-6% of the adult population, 23) and can have grave consequences after rupture resulting in subarachnoid hemorrhage. Surgical intervention significantly reduces the risk of rupture but the risk of such prophylactic treatment cannot be ignored.…”
