The impact of kangaroo care on exclusive breastfeeding in low birth weight newborns

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the impact of kangaroo care on exclusive breastfeeding in low birth weight newborns until 6 months of life. Methods:Prospective study carried out with 43 newborns (23 allocated in the kangaroo group and 23 in a control group) weighing < 2,000 g and staying in the neonatal unit for at least 7 days. Exclusive breastfeeding rates between the groups were compared until the age of 6 months. The chi-square test for categorical variables was used and the statistical significance level was 0.05.… Show more

“…Brooks found that a group of newborns, who underwent KMC in (NICU), had 100% exclusive breastfeeding at the time of hospital discharge (17). The result of Boo study showed higher breastfeeding rate at discharge (29.7% vs. 14.5%) (16) Honorina reported that exclusive breastfeeding rates were higher in the kangaroo group at hospital discharge (82.6 vs. 0%) (18). There are only a few studies with methods and findings similar to our findings.…”

“…The present study indicated that there was a 4.1 time increase in exclusive breast feeding by KMC at the time of hospital discharge. Honorina reported that infants who underwent KMC had a 2.34 time greater chance of being exclusively breastfed at discharge from hospital (18). Venancio showed that KMC is a protection factor for breastfeeding at discharge (24).…”

“…This study revealed a 4.1-fold increase in exclusive breastfeeding rate by KMC at the time of discharge from hospital (43). Almeida reported that the success rate of exclusive breastfeeding at the time of hospital discharge was 2.34-times more in infants who received KMC than in control group (61). Venancio showed that KMC is an important factor for continuity of breastfeeding at discharge.…”

“…In a second prospective study of 43 mother-infant dyads, breastfeeding rates at discharge from the NICU, 3 months, and six months were compared of mothers who skin-to-skin held and those who did not. [13] Breastfeeding rates were higher in the skin-to-skin holding group at discharge (82.6%) and 3 months of age (43.5% p = .005) as compared to those who did not skin-to-skin hold, however there was no discussion of sample differences or differences noted at six months.…”
