The impact of energy consumption and merchandise exports on CO2emission in the United Nations geoscheme regions

Abstract: Purpose While sustainable development policies are mostly set based on United Nations (UN) geoscheme classification, no study attempts to examine the impact of influential economic variables such as energy consumption (EC) and merchandise exports (ME) on carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in the UN geoscheme regions. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible impact of EC and ME on CO2 emission in UN geoscheme classification regions such as Africa, America, Arab, Asia and Europe. “…Second , after ensuring that the data are nonstationary, we examined the presences of long-run cointegration between variables of interest by applying the panel cointegration techniques of Pedroni (Pedroni, 2001) and Kao’s cointegration test. These techniques have been widely used in various studies to test for the presence of long-run relationships among integrated variables (Senarathne and Jayasinghe, 2021). Third , the descriptive statistics of data were checked to investigate the potential determining factors of RE production in developed and emerging countries.…”

“…There are numerous studies conducted on the nexuses between CO 2 emissions and renewable energy consumption; for instance, Acheampong et al (2021) conducted a study on SSA countries over the period 1960-2017 and discovered the evidence for a bidirectional IJESM 18,2 causality between renewable energy consumption and economic growth in SSA economies. Senarathne and Jayasinghe (2021) conducted a study on some selected European and American countries over the period 1971-2014 and discovered a long-run impact of energy consumption on CO 2 emissions. Abdulqadir (2022a) found overwhelming evidence of an infliction point between CO 2 emissions metric tons per capita and renewable energy consumption in OPEC member countries over the period 1990-2019.…”

“…Udemba and Tosun (2022) focused on sustainable development in Brazil. Senarathne and Jayasinghe (2021) focused on energy consumption and growth in the UN geoscheme regions. Hannesson (2020) uncovered the evidence of CO 2 intensity falls at a diminishing rate as countries grow richer, while Udemba and Philip (2022) on Urbanization, FDI and renewable energy in Indonesia.…”
