ObjectivesGiven the increasing need of long-term care and the low occupancy rate of nursing homes in Shanghai, this study attempts to explore what factors influence older people’s intention to enrol in nursing homes.DesignA cross-sectional observational study based on the theory of reasoned action was conducted. Survey data were collected from subjects during face-to-face interviews. Structural equation modelling was employed for data analysis.SettingThis study was conducted in six community health service centres in Shanghai, China. Two service centres were selected in urban, suburban and rural areas, respectively.ParticipantsA total of 641 Shanghai residents aged over 60 were surveyed.ResultsStructural equation modelling analysis showed that the research model fits the data well (χ2/df=2.948, Comparative Fit Index=0.972 and root mean squared error of approximation =0.055). Attitude (β=0.41, p<0.01), subjective norm (β=0.28, p<0.01) and value-added service (β=0.16, p<0.01) were directly associated with enrolment intention, explaining 32% of variance in intention. Attitude was significantly influenced by loneliness (β=−0.08, p<0.05), self-efficacy (β=0.32, p<0.01) and stigma (β=−0.24, p<0.01), while subjective norm was significantly influenced by life satisfaction (β=−0.15, p<0.01) and stigma (β=−0.43, p<0.01).ConclusionsThis study advances knowledge regarding the influencing factors of older people’s intention to enrol in nursing homes. It suggests that Chinese older persons’ perceived stigma has the strongest indirect effect on their intention to enrol in nursing homes. This is unique to the Chinese context and has practical implications for eldercare in China and other Asian countries with similar sociocultural contexts.

Background: Along the cognitive and behavioral changes during adolescence, some changes emerge in the quality and quantity of teenage females' interactions. They spend increasing amount of time with their peers and begin to place more importance on their views and advice. Therefore, parents are not the exclusive source of emotional experiences in this period. On the other hand, emotion socialization is 1 of the factors that affect behavioral problems in this period. Despite the growing body of research which shows the effect of parents and peers' emotion socialization on children's psychopathology, there is no study in Iran to compare the role of parents and peers' emotion socialization in predicting teenage females' psychopathology. An understanding of the parental and peer influences on teenage females' behavioral problems might suggest directions for the focus of interventional programs and family training. Methods: For this purpose, 202 teenage females selected by the convenient sampling method from Shiraz high schools, Iran, completed the measure of emotion socialization (the emotions as a child; EAC2) scale, peer emotion socialization (you and your friends; YYF) scale, and adolescents' problem status (the youth self-report; YSR) questionnaire. Results: Results showed that reward was the most popular strategy that parents and peers used. Also, results showed that parents' magnification and negligence can significantly and positively predict teenage females' psychopathology (P value < 0.001). Parental emotional practices are also shown to have a more important role in prediction of teenage females' psychopathology. Conclusions: Families should be viewed as central to the well-being of adolescents, and informed about their effect on their teenage females' behavioral problems. They should also be trained how to respond to their children emotions.

Abstract Background: In China, the issues arising from an aging population are becoming increasingly serious, so research on elderly health has become a topic of discussion. However, few studies have focused on the oldest-old with regards to their existing demand for elderly care services and anticipated living arrangements. Methods: The data of 4738 participants aged ≥80 years were extracted from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS) carried out in 2014. Using the Andersen model as the analysis framework, a multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between anticipated use of social services and intended residence and influencing factors. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to indicate the relationship between the influencing factors and the dependent variables.Results: From the descriptive analysis results, it is found that oldest-old showed high anticipated needs for care services, such as home visits (83.5%), health education (76.4%). And there exists a huge imbalance between supply and demand for aged care services. Moreover, living with children is still the most important way of providing for the oldest-old (44.4% in urban, 55.6% in rural). The multivariate regression results showed that the demand for elderly care services and anticipated living arrangements among the oldest-old in China are influenced by predisposing factors, enabling factors, and need factors (P<0.05). The oldest-old who are older, without housing property rights, childless, and ADL-restricted are more tend to live in long-term care institutions (ORs>1, P<0.05). Conclusions: The most vital needs of the oldest-old are home visits, health education, and spiritual comfort. There is a huge imbalance between supply and demand. Moreover, living with children is still the most important way of providing for the oldest-old. Demand for elderly care services and anticipated living arrangements are influenced by predisposing, enabling and need factors. Although the family plays an essential role in the healthcare of the oldest-old, the traditional pension model no longer meets the multi-level and diversified healthcare service needs of the oldest-old due to the rapidly aging Chinese population, which requires countermeasures from policy makers.
