The Cronobacter sp. in milk and dairy products: Detection and typing

Abstract: Cronobacter is a group of important foodborne pathogens that have been implicated in meningitis, sepsis and necrotising enterocolitis, especially in neonates through consumption of contaminated powdered infant formula (PIF). The detection of PIF contamination is of great concern to the infant formula industry. In this article, phenotypic and genotypic methods for detecting and typing Cronobacter are discussed in relation to minimising and controlling the risk of Cronobacter sp. contamination. To reliably detec… Show more

“…This pathogen has been isolated from various sources including dairy products, vegetables, dried meats and water (Yan et al 2012;Vojkovska et al 2016). Although the main source of C. sakazakii is considered to be infant formula, this is still unclear (Ye et al 2014). Investigations of different sources may contribute to better understanding of C. sakazakii as a pathogen.…”

“…; Ye et al . ). The International Commission for Microbiological Specification for Foods has ranked Cronobacter ( Enterobacter sakazakii ) as a “severe hazard for restricted populations, life threatening or substantial chronic sequelae of long duration.” The virulence difference among Cronobacter species were reported previously (Pagotto et al .…”

“…C. sakazakii have associated with severe forms of necrotizing and meningitis especially in neonates with mortality rate varies from 40–80% (Bar‐Oz, Preminger, Peleg, Block, & Arad, ; Healy et al, ; Van Acker et al, ) and the infective dose is estimated to range from 10 3 to ≥10 8 cells (Iversen & Forsythe, ; Pagotto, Nazarowec‐White, Bidawid, & Farber, ). C. sakazakii has been isolated from wide range of dairy products (Ye, Li, Wu, Zhang, & Lu, ). Moreover, powder infant formula has been epidemiologically linked to Cronobacter infections in infants (Healy et al, ; Jaradat et al, ).…”
