TheGalaxy Evolution Explorer: A Space Ultraviolet Survey Mission

Abstract: We give an overview of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Explorer Mission launched on 2003 April 28. GALEX is performing the first space UV sky survey, including imaging and grism surveys in two bands (1350-1750 and 1750-2750 galaxy survey. Spectroscopic (slitless) grism surveys ( ) are underway with various depths and sky R p 100-200 coverage. Many targets overlap existing or planned surveys in other bands. We will use the measured UV properties of local galaxies, along with corollary observatio… Show more

“…Such orbitally related changes should be also observed in the Balmer UV continuum. In fact, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) (Martin et al 2005;Morrissey et al 2007) observations of LMC S63 resulted in F(NUV)=647.59+/-13.48 mJy on MJD 55803 (φ = 0.700), and F(NUV)=553.52+/-7.92 mJy on MJD 55903 (φ = 0.796), and they seem to reflect mostly the expected changes in the Balmer continuum.…”

“…GCAT does not include the GALEX GR7 data release and so, when necessary, we also draw values from the BCS catalogue. We use magnitudes obtained from the Medium Imaging Survey (MIS; see Martin et al 2005) images for the ninety-six per cent of the Figure 2. NUV-r colour versus stellar mass diagram for galaxies in our sample.…”

“…Far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) magnitudes are collected from the Galaxy Evolution Survey (GALEX; Martin et al 2005). GALEX is a wide-field UV imaging survey performed in two UV bands: FUV ( 1539 ,…”
