“…Defects either in the initiation or the processing of recombination intermediates have profound consequences on the output of meiosis: they can stop meiotic cell cycle progression and/or induce missegregation of the homologues leading to inviable products (Rockmill & Roeder 1988;Hollingsworth et al 1990;Roeder 1995). Sequence divergence can also have profound effects on meiosis.…”

“…To address this issue, we examined the expression of HOP1, a gene that is not expressed in vegetative cells but is specifically induced in prophase of Meiosis I (Hollingsworth et al, 1990;Vershon et al, 1992). Using a plasmid-borne HOP1-lacZ gene fusion as a reporter (Vershon et al, 1992), we found that no activity was expressed in vegetatively growing sec14-1 cells, as expected, but that expression was induced upon transfer to sporulation medium at both permissive (25°C) and restrictive (34.5°C) temperatures (unpublished data).…”

“…HOPl, which is is required for pairing of homologous chromosomes (Hollingsworth and Byers 1989;Hollingsworth et al 1990), is expressed coincidentally with a large number of other meiotic genes such as spoil (Atcheson et al 1987), REDl (Thompson and Roeder 1989), and REC114 (Pittman et al 1993), which encode products required for successful comple tion of meiosis (for review, see Mitchell 1994). DITl, which is expressed just prior to spore formation, is re quired for deposition of the outermost layer of the spore wall (Briza et al 1990b).…”
