The German Version of the Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale (BADS): A Psychometric and Clinical Investigation

Abstract: Behavioural activation (BA) is an effective treatment for patients suffering from unipolar depression. The Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale (BADS) can be used to measure core elements of the BA treatment rationale. It is useful to track changes in activation within treatment. The BADS is available in different languages and has shown to possess good psychometric properties.

“…(17) BAS, the assessment instrument of behavioral activation, was generated through an exploratory factor analysis of a rationally derived set of items followed by a confirmatory factor analysis. (17, 18) This factor structure was replicated in community samples with elevated depressive symptoms (19, 20) and in depressed outpatients (21). Adequate reliability and validity were reported for the BAS in all the above studies, with BAS scores showing predicted associations with depressive symptoms.…”

“…In order to provide repeated measures of potential mechanisms of change, at the beginning of each training session, participants will make a series of ratings about their mood and cognition over the previous day. Participants will rate the mood words: happy, sad, calm, anxious, optimistic, hopeless, and the following statements “Positive thoughts seem to pop into my head,” “Negative thoughts seem to pop into my head,” “I have been able to look forward to activities and events,” “I have been able to enjoy taking part in activities or events,” “I was an active person and accomplished the goals I set out to do.” (this last item taken from the Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale [ 73 ], German version by [ 74 ]). Ratings are made on the scale used for the PANAS (i.e., from 1 = not at all to 5 = extremely).…”
