SUMMARY: Striped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) and whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) are important commercial and recreational species found in abundance along the South American Atlantic coast. In recent years otolith chemical composition has been used as a tool for identifying fish stocks for several species. The chemical composition of C. guatucupa and M. furnieri otoliths was determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) in samples from coastal sites (Partido de La Costa, Mar del Plata and San Blás Bay). Significant differences in the ratios of Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca and Sr/Ca for C. guatucupa otoliths and Cd/Ca, Cu/Ca, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Zn/Ca for M. furnieri otoliths suggest the existence of two different fish stocks, one originating in the north (including Samborombón Bay and Partido de La Costa fisheries) and another originating in the south (including "El Rincón" and San Blás fisheries). These results agree with previous studies on the same species using different methodologies. These stocks may be separated by an oceanographic barrier, the "Frente El Rincón". Otolith chemical composition has not been previously used in South America for identifying fish stocks and may be a simple, quick and useful tool for the sustainable exploitation and management of commercial species. -La pescadilla de red (Cynoscion guatucupa) y la corvina rubia (Micropogonias furnieri) son especies de importancia comercial y recracional abundantes a lo largo de la costa atlántica sudamericana. En recientes años, la composición química del otolito es utilizada como una herramienta para la identificación de stocks pesqueros. La composición química de los otolitos de C. guatucupa y M. furnieri se determino por espectrómetro de emisión atómica (ICP-OES) en muestras provenientes de localidades costeras (Partido de La Costa, Mar del Plata y Bahía San Blás). Se hallaron diferencias significativas en las relaciones Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca y Sr/Ca para C. guatucupa y en Cd/Ca, Cu/Ca, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca y Zn/Ca para M. furnieri, lo que sugiere la existencia de dos diferentes stocks pesqueros, uno originado en el norte (que incluye las pesquerías de Bahía Samborombón y del Partido de La Costa) y otro stock, originado en el sur (que incluye las pesquerías de "El Rincón" y Bahía Blás). Estos resultados coinciden con los hallados en estudios previos utilizando diferentes metodologías. Estos stocks pueden estar separados por un barrera oceanografía el "Frente El Rincón". La composición química del otolito se utilizo por primera vez en Sudamerica para la identificación de stocks pesqueros, siendo un método fácil, rápido y una herramienta útil para el manejo y explotación sustentable de especies comerciales. The aim of this study was to analyze the isotopic composition in muscle of striped weakfish Cynoscion guatucupa from Southwest Atlantic Ocean in order to evaluate a possible variation in δ 13 C and δ 15 N in response to dietary shifts that occur as animals grow. We also explored for isotopic evidence of differences between sample locations. The results showed an agreement between isotope analysis and previous conventional studies. Differences in the isotope composition between sampling location were not observed. A positive relation exists between isotope values and total body length of the animals. The Cluster analysis defined three groups of size classes, validated by the MDS. Differences in the relative consumption of prey species in each size class were also observed performing isotope mixing models (SIAR). Variation in δ 15 N among size classes would be associated with the consumption of a different type of prey as animals grow. Small striped weakfish feed on small crustaceans and progressively increase their consumption of fish (anchovy, Engraulis anchoita), increasing by this way their isotope values. On the other hand, differences in δ 13 C values seemed to be related to age-class specific spatial distribution patterns. Therefore, large and small striped weakfish remain specialized but feeding on different prey at different trophic levels. These results contribute to the study of the diet of striped weakfish, improve the isotopic ecology models and highlight on the importance of accounting for variation in the isotopic composition in response to dietary shifts with the size of one of the most important fishery resources in the region.Keywords: Cynoscion guatucupa, stable isotopes, diet, ontogenetic shifts, Southwest Atlantic Coastal Ecosystem. SUMMARY:The genetic structure of populations/species was established during the Quaternary glaciations. Over the last 250 ka (Pleistocene), the South American marine biogeographic history recorded three main glaciations: the most extensive one between 140 and 180 ka, a minor one between 60 and 70 ka, and the last glaciation approximately between 15 and 35 ka. With the aim of assessing the pattern of molecular diversity and historical demography of weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa), a 365 bp sequence of the mitochondrial control region was amplified at four coastal sites located in the southwestern Atlantic. Haplotype diversity was high, whereas nucleotide diversity was low and similar at each sample site. AMOVA failed to detect population structure. This lack of differentiation was subsequently observed in the distribution of samples sites in the haplotype network. Fu's Fs was negative and highly significant while the mismatch analysis yielded a unimodal distribution, indicating a global population expansion. The Bayesian skyline plot revealed a coalescence time of weakfish population at approximately 210 ka, and a very rapid expansion from 180-190 ka, probably caused by a habitat expansion, as these two events coincide in time.Keywords: bayesian skyline plots, glacial cycles, mitochondrial DNA, control region, population genetics, marine fish, Atlantic coast, Pleistocene. RESUMEN: Filogeografía de la pescadilla de red CynosCion guatuCupa (Perciformes: Sciaenidae) del Atlántico suroccidental. -La estructura genética de las poblaciones/especies se ha establecido principalmente durante las glaciaciones del Cuaternario. La historia biogeográfica marina en Sudamérica en los últimos 250 ka registra durante el Pleistoceno tres glaciaciones importantes: la más extensa entre 140-180 ka, una menor entre 60-70 ka y la última glaciación aproximadamente entre 15-35 ka. Para evaluar el patrón de diversidad molecular y de demografía histórica en la pescadilla de red (Cynoscion guatucupa) se analizó una secuencia de 365 pb de la región control del ADN mitocondrial en cuatro zonas costeras del Atlán-tico suroccidental. La diversidad haplotípica fue alta mientras que la diversidad nucleotídica fue baja y ambos índices fueron similares en cada sitio de muestreo. El análisis de varianza molecular (AMOVA) no detectó estructura poblacional. Esta falta de diferenciación posteriormente se pudo observar en la distribución de los sitios de muestreo en la red de haplotipos. El test de Fu fue negativo y altamente significativo y el análisis de falta de coincidencia produjo una distribución unimodal indicando expansión poblacional. El skyline plot indicó un tiempo a la coalescencia de 210 ka y una expansión poblacional que comenzó hace 180-190 ka que probablemente se produjo por la expansión del hábitat ya que ambos eventos coinciden en el tiempo.
