The Fishing Productivity Assessement Upstream and Downstream of Tucuruí Hydroeletric Dam, Tocantins-Araguaia basin, Brazil

Abstract: The Tocantins-Araguaia basin is the second largest in Brazil and the most extensive in the drainage area totally placed in Brazilian territory. A time series of fishery production of more than 30 years of Tucuruí Hydroeletric dam, between 1981 and 2016, in low Tocantins, in ten landing harbor (five upstream and five downstream) was analyzed to compare productivity and indicate suggestions for better planning and public policies focused on the fishery resources in this basin. After analyzing over 16,000 land… Show more

“…The reduction in the populations of large migratory catfish, such as filhote, piraíba, and dourada of the Brachyplatystoma genus, is notable, particularly in the middle reaches of the Tocantins River, where they were once an important component of fishing but are now sporadically caught [61], as anticipated since the construction of Tucuruí [16]. Alternatives to mitigate and compensate for the impacts are often suggested for short periods and generally disregard the cumulative effects and those that are noticeable in the long term.…”

“…This destabilizes the fishery governance system and, ultimately, contributes to a decrease in the sustainability of this activity (Isaac et al, 1993;Johannes et al, 2000;ST. Martin, 2006;Pryshon;Cunha;Dias., 2019). This authoritative approach to the regulation of the fisheries reflects the belief that the fishers are incapable of understanding the ecological system and the measures necessary to regulate their fishery activities to guarantee their long-term sustainability (Mcgoodwin, 2000).…”

“…A diversidade de espécies capturadas talvez seja o fator mais relevante para as pescarias do cluster 2, garantindo assim, melhores condições de negociação, (Juras et al, 2004, Hallwass, 2011, Prysthon et al, 2019. Porém, o valor de venda desses peixes é de no máximo R$2,50/kg (veri cação de campo).…”
