The first report on Listeria monocytogenes producing siderophores and responds positively to N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) molecules by enhanced biofilm formation

Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes are Gram-positive well-known emerging food-borne pathogens causing listeriosis in humans. In the present study, we have isolated biofilm-forming Listeria sp. from utensils used by a local milk collection dairy society at Usgao Goa, which collects milk for Goa dairy. Through biochemical tests and 16S rRNA sequence analysis, the bacterium was confirmed to be L. monocytogenes and designated as strain BN3, having GenBank accession number MF095110. We report for the first time Gram-positive L… Show more

“…QS is a cell-to-cell communication used by many bacteria to coordinate common behaviors and regulate a diverse array of physiological activities through the sensing of cell-population densities. In this process, bacteria produce, release, and detect chemical signal molecules called 'autoinducers' (AI) that increase in concentration concomitantly with cell density [32][33][34]. The reach of a minimal threshold stimulatory concentration leads to activation or induction of QS-dependent gene expression among a responding bacterial population.…”

“…In particular, L. monocytogenes AIP is encoded by the agrBDCA operon and directly affects its adherence [13] and cell invasion capacity [14]. Nevertheless, a recent study carried out by Naik, Bhangui and Bhat demonstrates that despite the lack of production of HSL-mediated system molecules, L. monocytogenes is able to positively respond to short-chain homoserine lactones (i.e., C 6 -HSL), promoting its biofilm-forming capacity on polystyrene plates and borosilicate glass coverslips [15].…”

“…Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell to cell communication mechanism between bacteria which helps in regulating biofilm development, plasmid transfer, swarming, bioluminescence etc. (Irie and Parsek 2008;LaSarre and Federle 2013;Naik et al 2017). It also helps in provoking the expression of virulence genes like exotoxin, siderophores, enzymes, adhesion molecules (Novick and Muir 1999;Gonzalez and Keshavan 2006;LaSarre and Federle 2013).…”

“…Both Gram positive and Gram-negative bacteria possess different types of quorum sensing systems (QS). Gram positive bacteria use peptides based QS and Gram-negative bacteria use acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) molecules based QS (LaSarre and Federle 2013; Naik et al 2017). There is only one report demonstrating AHL as quorum sensing system in a marine Gram-positive bacteria Exiguobacterium sp.…”
