The first record of Pyxidium tardigradum Van der Land, 1964 (Ciliophora) in Romania

Abstract: In three lichen samples collected from eastern part of Romania, three populations of Ramazzottius cf. oberhaeuseri (Doyère, 1840) infested by Pyxidium tardigradum Van der Land 1964 were found. In this short correspondence we present a first record of P. tardigradum in Romania and infestation rates in studied populations according to the different life stages.

“…The majority of P. tardigradum are single stalked, but colonies have also been observed (Vicente et al ., ). There are a few records of P. tardigradum associated with European tardigrades (Iharos, ; Morgan, ; Hallas, ; Wright, ; Marley & Wright, ; Ciobanu et al ., ) or with both European and Asian tardigrades (Vicente et al ., ). Additionally, both Jennings () and Dastych () have reported similar epizoic protozoa attached to Antarctic eutardigrades, but in neither case has the species been identified as P. tardigradum .…”
