The first fossil immature of Elmidae: an unusual riffle beetle larva preserved in Baltic amber

Abstract: Elmidae, riffle beetles, have both adult and immature stages that show specializations for water environments. Fossils of adults of Elmidae are already known from amber, however a record of immatures was so far lacking. We report here the first fossil larva of Elmidae, preserved in Baltic amber. To be able to access details of the body hidden by inclusions and “Verlumung” we conducted, in addition to optical documentation methods, micro-CT and synchrotron documentation methods. The larva is characterised by pr… Show more

“…For the new fossil presented here it is not easy to evaluate which characters represent plesiomorphies or convergent characters. Hence, as in other fossil larvae (e.g., HAug et al 2019a;zippeL et al 2022, the new larva has characters that are known from modern relatives, but not necessarily in the same combination. A more precise interpretation is not possible with the available characters.…”

“…This statement is, of course, tricky as it relates to a purely typological type of thinking. Yet, it is a general phenomenon for fossils to show a mixture of characters known from separate modern lineages (e.g., Haug et al 2019a; Luque et al 2019; Zippel et al 2022, 2023). There are two major factors for this phenomenon: plesiomorphies and convergences.…”

“…An important difference to plotting head together with stylets is that the occupation of the morphospace of the modern larvae is larger than that of the Eocene larvae. Yet, some Eocene larvae plot outside the range of the modern larvae, emphasising again that the Eocene fauna also differs from the modern fauna concerning insect larvae [ 115 ].…”
