Absolute quantification of TCA cycle intermediates in mouse ocular tissues reveals distinct tissue- and sex-specific mitochondrial metabolism

Although the epithelial cells overlying the anterior lens are rich in small mitochondria and primarily produce ATP through OXPHOS 47,48,50,123 , the anterior lens itself has a very low oxygen tension in vivo - about 10-fold lower than that of the cornea 118 . Given the limited oxygen supply, reverse SDH reactions in the lens are likely driven in a similar manner to the retina, leading to the reduction of fumarate to succinate 68,69 .…”
