“…Present along the Caspian Sea shores, in the Volga River, and the Sea of Azov. Lived until the late 1980s in the Aral Sea but is possibly extinct there now (Andreev et al 1992, Aladin et al 1998, Micklin et al 2014). …”

“…However, it was restricted to the southern part of the sea (Andreev & Andreeva, 1988). Harris mud crab was still recorded in the 1980s when the sea underwent a strong regression, increased salinity (about 30 g l −1 ) and separation into the Large and the Small Aral salt lakes (Andreev et al , 1992; Aladin et al , 2004). Desiccation of the Large Aral continued and apparently R. harrisi has not survived the phase of increasing salinity up to 57 g l −1 .…”

“…The Small Aral is maintaining lower salinity (now 8–11 g l −1 ) owing to the Syr-Daria River discharge (Izhitskiy et al , 2016). It seems that the Harris mud crab had failed to reach the Small Aral before its separation in 1989 (Andreev et al , 1992). In the expeditions of IO RAS in 2014 (Izhitskiy et al , 2016) and 2015 the coastal areas of the Small Aral near village of Akbasty (46°16.5′N 60°54.7′E) was surveyed specifically for R. harrisii , however there have been no sightings.…”

“…We propose this species to be classified as LC. While the species has incurred a reduction of range given regional extirpation in the Aral Sea (Andreev et al 1992;Aladin et al 1998;Micklin et al 2014), it still occupies a very large distribution range and is common within the Caspian and Azov drainage basins. Moreover, it has expanded into man-made channels between the Volga and Don rivers (personal observation A.F.S.…”

“…Theodoxus major is found in the Caspian Sea and parts of the Azov Sea (Roth 1987, Karpinsky 2002Anistratenko et al 2017;Sands et al 2019a) and is also present in the Volga and Don river systems (Sands et al 2019b). It has likely become regionally extinct in the Aral Sea (Andreev et al 1992;Aladin et al 1998;Plotnikov et al 2016), although it may still persist in some of its associated drainages (Zettler 2007). In Western Asia it can be found in the Aras River system (Aliyev and Ahmadi 2010), Lake Yerevan and its catchment systems in Armenia (Sands et al 2019b), and Masalli in Azerbaijan.…”
