Previous studies have demonstrated the phase partition of organic pollutants were controlled by various factors, such as suspended particle content, dissolved organic matter content, and particle organic matter content, among others (Chen et al, 2011b). The different partitions observed for HBCDs and TBBPA between the present study and the study by Harrad et al (2009) may attribute to the different water properties mentioned above in two regions.…”

“…The DOC contents (1.14e1.43 with mean of 1.28 mg/ L) in the present study were lower than those in the Pearl River Estuary (1.11e6.41 with mean of 1.68 mg/L). Meanwhile, the log K ow values for TBBPA and HBCDs were generally lower than those for PBDE congeners, which will lead to less partition to DOC just as the case of PCBs (Chen et al, 2011b). Alternatively, the content of total suspended particle matter (mean of 14.6 mg/L) was also lower than that (mean of 66 mg/L) in the Pearl River Estuary.…”

A previous study on the partition of PBDEs in the water column in the Pearl River Estuary revealed that the log K oc (obs) for most of PBDE congeners were lower than log K oc (Pre) (Chen et al, 2011b). Sorption to colloids was suggested to be the main reason.…”
