The facial nerve branches are oriented vertically in their course into the orbicularis 7 while the sensory nerves pierce the muscle to access the subcutaneous tissue. Scott et al, 8 in a recent article, felt that the vertically oriented fibers were sensory branches of the ophthalmic nerve and that the terminal branches of the facial nerve to the upper eyelid innervate the orbicularis oculi from the undersurface in a horizontal orientation.…”
