“…Due to these technological limitations, the strategies aiming at the reduction of soot emission by reciprocating engines need to be complemented by methodologies of fuel formulation [8,9]. The guidelines formulated by the recent Worldwide Fuel Charter [10] support these methodologies as the recommended aromatics content of gasoline has for instance been reduced from 50 % down to 35 % within few years.…”

“…One constraining factor is their high cost, which makes it expensive to run large-scale combustion experiments. Dooley et al [17] showed that a less expensive mixture of n-decane and iso-octane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane) is an appropriate surrogate for a synthetic paraffinic jet fuel (i.e., S-8) rich in mono-methylated alkanes because the real fuel's "distinct chemical functionalities" [17] are captured in the surrogate. On the other hand, Mueller et al [18] concluded that utilizing large iso-alkanes representative of those found in real fuels could be advantageous.…”

“…Also, DCN is considered as one of the critical properties in the investigation of surrogates for aviation fuels [15][16][17]. The fuel sample is filtered prior to the test by using a syringe fitted with a disposable 5 μm filter and injected into pre-heated, temperature-controlled air.…”
