The Evaluation of ICP OES for the Determination of Potentially Toxic Elements in Lipsticks: Health Risk Assessment

Abstract: This study aimed to optimize and validate the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometric method (ICP OES) for the simultaneous determination of eleven potentially toxic elements (Al, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Fe, Sb, Mn, and Zn) in lipstick samples. The method was evaluated by applying the standard addition method. The recoveries for all elements in lipsticks were between 90% and 110%, except for Cd and Pb they were <90% and >110%, respectively. The health risk assessment was determined by calcula… Show more

“…If the value HQ ≤ 1 then no adverse health effects (no risk); if HQ ≥ 1 (Mrmošanin et al, 2019). The HQs of investigated elements ranged from 4.46E-02 to 1.61E-01 and from 3.79E-07 to 2.56E-06, for the lipsticks and face foundation, respectively, and for all samples were below 1.…”

“…In addition, there are many other studies carried out to estimate the level of heavy metals in cosmetics (19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24). These studies use different techniques like UV-VIS & microfluidic Paper-based analytical device platform (µPADs) (25), inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) (26), inductively coupled plasma opticalemission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) (27), laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) (28), X-ray fluorescence (XRD) (29), graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) (21), and including flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) (30) to evaluate the concentration of toxic metals in cosmetics. Table 1 shows a comparison between the proposed method (AAS) and other methods.…”

“…Also, a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations are associated with iron overwhelms in cells that lead to the increase of iron toxicity including neurodegenerative diseases, anaemia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease 15,16 . Extensive screening of literature was carried out on the analysis of iron levels in different lipstick and a variety of analytical techniques have been published including Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) [17][18][19][20][21][22] , and Inductivity Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrophotometer(ICP-OES) 9,23 .…”
