The European Community Respiratory Health Survey

Abstract: The European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) was planned to answer specific questions about the distribution of asthma and health care given for asthma in the European Community. Specifically, the survey is designed to estimate variations in the prevalence of asthma, asthma-like symptoms and airway responsiveness; to estimate variations in exposures to known or suspected risk factors for asthma, and assess to what extent these variations explain the variations in the prevalence of disease; and to e… Show more

“…Seven hundred and fifty seven participants attended the laboratory for that particular study. The full methodology of this study has been published elsewhere (Burney et al, 1994;Abramson et al, 1996), but briefly, 4500 adults aged between 20 and 44 y were randomly selected from the electoral rolls from three federal electorates in the inner south-eastern area of Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria. These subjects were invited to complete a brief postal questionnaire (phase I of the study).…”

“…The time between both home visits ranged from 6 to 13 months with a median time interval of 7 months, whereas three-quarters of all homes were revisited after 6-8 months. The study population consisted of two parts corresponding to subsets of participants from two other studies: 362 adults living in Erfurt or Hamburg who had participated within the German centers of the European Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) (Burney et al, 1994) and 415 school children living in three regions of former East Germany (Zerbst, Bitterfeld, Hettstedt) who participated in a study of air pollution effects and determinants of allergic diseases . Details of the selection of the study population have been described elsewhere (Richter et al, 2000;Heinrich et al, 2001).…”

“…The full details of the sampling protocol for the ECRHS has been described elsewhere (Burney et al, 1994;Abramson et al, 1996). Brie¯y, participating centres selected an area for study de®ned by pre-existing administrative boundaries with at least 150 000 inhabitants and upto-date sampling frames for subjects aged 20 ± 44 y of age.…”

“…The European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) was a multicentre study which aimed to compare the prevalence of adult asthma between countries, using standardized epidemiological methods and to identify the risk factors associated with the international variation in asthma prevalence throughout Europe and elsewhere (Burney et al, 1994). Some dietary information was also collected as part of the ECRHS.…”
