The emergence of permanent teeth in Flemish children

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the timing of emergence of permanent teeth in Flanders (Belgium). Data were obtained in the Signal-Tandmobiel projecta, a longitudinal study in a sample of 4468 Flemish children. Survival analysis with a log-logistic distribution was performed to calculate median (and mean) values and 95% CI's for all permanent teeth. The analysis indicated significantly earlier emergence ages in girls than in boys. The emergence pattern turned out to be symmetric in both sexes. … Show more

“…Differences in mean age of permanent tooth emergence between girls and boys was also observed in other studies 7,12,14 . In addition, hereditary factors, ethnicity, place of residence (urban or rural), and nutritional and hormonal characteristics are aspects that have been investigated in the literature 7,9 .…”

“…The collected data enabled the production of valid information about the presence of first permanent molars, according to the age cohorts defined in intervals of six months, separated into boys and girls. In certain studies, this information was produced from annual exams 11,12 . Using the data obtained in conjunction with the educational system, it is possible to estimate the number of children and emerged molars that require attention and surveillance, using specific measures which must be object of more in-depth studies.…”

“…In ''Method B,'' interval-censored longitudinal data are analyzed by assuming that events occurred at the midpoint of the interval or evenly spaced within the interval if more than one event occurred within an observation window. This approach to analyzing interval-censored data is well known to be problematic (Lindsey and Ryan, 1998), and more appropriate methods are available that have been applied to longitudinal data on dental emergence (Holman and Jones, 1998;Parner et al, 2001;Bogaerts et al, 2002;Holman and Jones, 2003;Leroy et al, 2003;Holman and Yamaguchi, 2005;Yamaguchi and Holman, 2010).…”

“…Garn et al, 1957). The timing of tooth emergence is also important in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics for planning treatments (Leroy et al, 2003). For this reason, dental and public health researchers have developed population standards for permanent tooth eruption (Diamanti and Townsend, 2003;Eskeli et al, 1999).…”
