The effects of isotretinoin therapy on the biliary system

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential effects of isotretinoin on the biliary system in patients with acne vulgaris receiving isotretinoin therapy. This was a preliminary retrospective study involving 40 patients with severe acne vulgaris who attended the dermatology clinic and were administered different doses (20 or 30 mg/day) of isotretinoin. Serum levels of AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, and indirect bilirubin at the beginning and at the first month of therapy… Show more

“…A statistically significant elevation in serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, and gamma‐glutamyl transferase (GGT) values was striking in patients receiving isotretinoin at a dose of 30 mg/day. Significant rise in AST and GGT serum levels was prominent even in the lower 20 mg/day dose group was also noted (Saylam Kurtipek et al, ). In a retrospective study, the authors noted that liver function test alterations isotretinoin usage, in most of the cases, were mild, transient, and stable even when maintaining the same dose of isotretinoin (Pona et al, ).…”
