A 12‐week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of two dietary probiotics; Bacillus subtilis KCTC 2217 or Bacillus licheniformis KCCM 11775 with two prebiotics; mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) or fructooligosaccharide (FOS) in Japanese eel. Fish averaging 12.8 ± 0.47 g (mean ± SD) were randomly distributed into five treatments with triplicate tanks. A basal control diet (CON) and four synbiotic diets supplementing B. subtilis + MOS (BSM), B. subtilis + FOS (BSF), B. licheniformis + MOS (BLM), and B. licheniformis + FOS (BLF). Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed all synbiotic diets were higher than those of fish fed CON. Immune‐related gene expression of heat shock protein 70 and immunoglobulin M of fish fed BSF and BLM were significantly higher than those of fish fed CON. Fish fed BSF and BLM had significantly higher intestinal villi length than those of fish fed BLF and CON (p < .05). Disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila of fish fed all synbiotic diets were significantly higher than those of fish fed CON (p < .05). Therefore, these results indicated that dietary B. subtilis with FOS (BSF) and B. licheniformis with MOS (BLM) could have beneficial effects on intestinal morphology, and immune‐related gene expression in Japanese eel.

This study aimed to develop a synbiotic combination with probiotic, Lactobacillus plantarum 7–40 and one of three prebiotics, fructooligosaccharide (FOS), galactooligosaccharide (GOS) and mannan oligosaccharide (MOS). The best in vitro growth was observed when probiotic was cultured in the medium containing either FOS or GOS as the sole of carbon source. The analysis of enzyme activity revealed that GOS induced the highest activities of protease and β‐galactosidase of probiotic. Based on the findings, probiotic + GOS were selected as synbiotic to evaluate if it could promote the growth of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. For this, four diets, including a basal diet with no GOS or probiotic (control), 0.4% GOS (PRE), 108 CFU probiotic kg−1 (PRO) and 0.4% GOS in combination with 108 CFU probiotic kg−1 (SYN), were fed to shrimp for 60 days, and then the growth performance, intestinal microbiota (including total Vibrio counts, VBCs; and lactic acid bacteria, LAB) and digestive enzyme (including protease, leu‐aminopeptidase and β‐galactosidase) were evaluated. The weight gain (WG) of shrimp fed the PRO did not significantly differ from those of control (p > .05). Shrimp fed the SYN had significantly higher WG compared with the other treatments (p < .05). In addition, the SYN‐fed shrimp had significantly higher LAB and protease, leu‐aminopeptidase and β‐galactosidase activity (p < .05). The lowest presumptive Vibrio count (VBC) was also observed in intestines of SYN‐fed shrimp. Therefore, we suggested that Lac. plantarum 7–40+ GOS can be used as a synergistic synbiotic for shrimp culture.

The increased demand for food fish, together with the banning of antibiotics for fish growth promotion and the greater public awareness for healthy fish production, led to an increased interest in the potential of functional feeds as health promoters. Prebiotics are functional ingredients that are used in fish, being reported to be associated with improvements in growth, feed efficiency, gut microbiota, digestive enzyme activities, gut morphology, immune status, disease resistance, intermediary metabolism, and stress responses. Those benefits may be related with the increase in gut beneficial bacteria, bacteria end‐products of prebiotic fermentation, or the interaction between prebiotics and pattern recognition receptors. Due to the reported prebiotic‐related positive effects in fish, a large amount of studies have been published in the last years, mainly focusing on prebiotics’ benefits to fish. Thus, the present review focuses on prebiotics’ potential as functional ingredients, focusing on their mechanisms of action. In addition, this review summarizes prebiotic effects in Mediterranean aquaculture fish, whose production has greatly increased in the last years. Finally, topics that deserve to be further explored, such as prebiotic effects related with fish age and size, and timing and duration of administration are suggested.
