The Effects of Different Intensities of Pruning on the Growth ofPinus radiatain South Africa

Abstract: SYNOPSISFive pruning schedules were tested using a Latin Square design at the Stormsriver State Forest, Tsitsikamma Forest Region. Treatments included those standard at the time and combinations of prunings at earlier ages or to greater heights. The severity of each pruning regime was expressed with a severity index factor which incorporates the percentage live crown removed, age and mean tree height. Volume increment loss (as much as 16,7%) and the extent of epicormic shoot development were significantly corre… Show more

“…A living crown of about 50% of the tree height should be left in order to avoid reduced tree growth. It has been noted that the pruning of one or two lowest living whorls of branches can even increase the growth of a tree (e.g., Vuokila 1976, Lange et al 1987, Giefing et al 2004, since the energy efficiency of the lowest living branches can already be negative. However, normally pruning slows down the height and diameter increment for some years, depending on the proportion of green branches pruned (Heiskanen 1958, Vuokila 1976, Kannisto and Heräjärvi 2006.…”

“…The amount of canopy left on a tree after pruning affects light interception, and therefore the impact of pruning on dbh growth (Bandara et al 1999;Lange et al 1987;Sutton & Crowe 1975). However, as trees have tapered stems, leaving more canopy results in a larger DOS in the next lift, given the same delay for the next lift, and DOS size should be consistent between pruning lifts to promote reasonable PLIs while not incurring needless loss in growth (Figure 12).…”
