The Effectiveness of Multiple Electrode Radiofrequency Ablation in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Lesions More than 3 cm in Size and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer Stage A to B2

Abstract: Outcomes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lesions >3.0 cm in size including Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage B after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) with a single electrode remain unsatisfactory. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of RFA with multiple electrodes (ME-RFA) for HCC tumors 3.1-7.0 cm in size and BCLC stage B. This retrospective study included 70 consecutive patients with 58 medium- (3.1-5.0 cm) and 17 large- (5.1-7.0 cm) sized HCCs after ME-RFA using a controller. Outcomes in te… Show more

“…This suggests that among Child-Pugh class A patients, starting sorafenib when liver functions are well preserved, such as at class A-5 points, is preferable. The positive results observed in the present study for patients who underwent post-progression treatment such as TACE, hepatic arte- 118 rial infusion chemotherapy, or ablation [29][30][31][32] after sorafenib therapy also indicate that initiating therapy when liver function is well preserved (Child-Pugh class A-5 points) is beneficial.…”

“…Thus, first-line treatment strategies should be as curative as possible. Because it is possible to achieve complete cure in subclass B1 patients [33], some of them were treated with surgical procedures or RFA. In those treated with cTACE, super selective cTACE was performed in an attempt to obtain complete cure.…”

“…Once HCC is detected by imaging [8][9][10][11] or biomarkers [12,13] , several treatments are applied, such as resection [14] , ablation [15][16][17][18][19] , transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) [20][21][22], hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy [23,24] or systemic therapy [25][26][27] .…”
