The effectiveness of interactive online tutorials in first-year large biology course

Abstract: PurposeOnline resources can be helpful for students and can augment the content presented in learning environments. A team consisting of four biologists, a graduate student, instructional designer and media developers collaborated on the design, development and evaluation of first-year biology online tutorials in a Canadian University. The tutorials were designed to address knowledge gaps resulting in low success rates and attrition of first-year students in biology. The decrease in the number of students in S… Show more

“…In addition, LMSs allow STEM educators to track learning outcomes, predict achievements (for early detection of students at risk), and then use the identified information to adapt and modify teaching practices (Dominguez et al, 2016;Hempel et al, 2020;Price et al, 2021;Sergis et al, 2017;Zakaria et al, 2019;Zheng et al, 2019). The future of STEM education can continue to be improved with innovative LMSs and technology-enhanced learning materials (Zhao et al, 2018), such as online laboratories (Henke et al, 2021), online tutorials (Rissanen & Costello, 2021) and virtual reality applications (Christopoulos et al, 2020). A recent systematic review on research trends in STEM education (Li et al, 2020) indicates that 'learning environments' which include an LMS is one key area that will continue to evolve.…”

“…Video pembelajaran dapat di tonton berulang-ulang apabila sudah diupload ke youtube. Video yang interaktif akan sangat membantu siswa untuk bisa mengerti dengan cepat (Rissanen & Costello, 2021). Salah satu platform yang bisa digunakan dalam pembuatan video pembelajaran adalah active learning.…”

“…Using scaffolded interactive tutorials that cater to a variety of student proficiency levels (e.g., programming skills or statistical background) can reduce cognitive load and improve student engagement and comprehension when learning programming and discipline‐specific content. This approach allows students to engage with material most comfortable to them, whether that means directly writing associated code or adjusting data inputs in an interactive application (Custer et al., 2021; Farrell & Carey, 2018; McGuire et al., 2022; Rissanen & Costello, 2023). A self‐paced, scaffolded, multi‐proficiency level approach to learning empowers students to challenge themselves in a productive way by tackling complex problems while gaining computational literacy and scientific skills (Dill‐McFarland et al., 2021; Emery et al., 2021; Farrell & Carey, 2018).…”
