The Effect of Wound Instillation of a Novel Purified Capsaicin Formulation on Postherniotomy Pain: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study

Abstract: In the setting of a well-defined analgesic protocol standard, VAS AUC analysis and a mixed-effect analysis showed superior analgesia of capsaicin relative to placebo during the first 3-4 days after inguinal hernia repair.

“…24 Hence, an actual treatment effect, although hidden by high variability between individuals, may be detected once the variability is properly factored in. 25 The present study aimed to provide an initial proof of concept for adding donepezil to existing gabapentin treatment in patients with neuropathic pain caused by surgery or trauma. It was hypothesised that an eventual pain-relieving effect of the drug combination was detectable (although not statistically significant) in a small group (< 10 subjects), or else the effect could not be considered as clinically relevant.…”

“…Injectable capsaicin is used for the control of post operative pain, such as after total knee replacement, total hip replacement, hernia repair, shoulder arthroscopy, and bunionectomy (Aasvang et al, 2008). Pre-administration of neural blockade before injection of capsaicin may greatly decrease the burning discomfort.…”
