The effect of ventilation tube insertion on quality of life in children with persistent otitis media with effusion
Abstract: Objectives To determine the effect of ventilation tube (VT) surgery on quality of life (QoL) in children with persistent otitis media with effusion (OME). Design Secondary analysis of trial data (oral steroids versus placebo for persistent OME), comparing QoL by history of VT surgery performed between 5 weeks and 12 months post‐randomisation. Multilevel regression models were used to identify the association between VT surgery and QoL scores at 12 months, controlling for pre‐exposure risk factors associated wi… Show more

“…In addition, there was no significant difference in hearing improvement between the group of children who had ventilation tubes in place for 6-9 months versus the group who had ventilation tubes in place for 10-12 months. Similar results have been reported from the study conducted by Sanyaolu et al 25 .…”

“…It includes 16 additional questions to further identify specific signs or symptoms related to functional health status. OM8‐30 is another alternative used by Sanyaolu 2020, and incorporates an assessment of ear infections, speech, language, and school progress, but is a lengthy survey that is difficult to score 40 . While OM‐6, OMO‐22, and OM8‐30 were rated in a 2007 review by Timmerman et al to be the best for assessing the clinical impact of disease, the OMO‐22 and OM8‐30 were highlighted to possess discriminative qualities for identifying children who may benefit from surgical intervention 41 .…”

“…As pontuações da subescala de dificuldade auditiva (HD) OM8-30 aos 12 meses foram melhores naqueles que fizeram cirurgia de TV (diferença média ajustada (aMD) = -0,46 (intervalo de confiança de 95%: -0,69 a -0,23), P < 0,001), e isso variou por quando a cirurgia ocorreu (aMD para cirurgia entre 5 semanas e 6 meses = -0,4 [-0,67 a -0,13], P = 0,004 e entre 6 e 12 meses = -0,54, [-0,87 a -0,22] , P = 0,001) (Sanyaolu LN et al 2020).…”
