The Effect of Stabilisation Agents on the Immunomodulatory Properties of Gold Nanoparticles Obtained by Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been investigated extensively as drug carriers in tumour immunotherapy in combination with photothermal therapy. For this purpose, GNPs should be stabilised in biological fluids. The goal of this study was to examine how stabilisation agents influence cytotoxicity and immune response in vitro. Spherical GNPs, 20 nm in size, were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP). Three types of stabilising agents were used: sodium citrate (SC), polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP), and poly-eth… Show more

“…Stabilizing agents are used to maintain the stability of NPs under harsh conditions like in the cell or in the bloodstream. They also prevent aggregation of NPs, improve their stability in water solutions, and change their bioavailability in biological systems [140, 141]. Furthermore, the NPs’ coating impacts structural stability and prevents quenching [142].…”

“…The release of lytic enzyme or oxidative stress can also cause the irreversible damage to the inflamed tissues [79]. The elevation in levels of IL-1β is responsible for various inflammatory disorders such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis [80]. However, the decrease in TNF-α levels is considered a key therapy for rheumatoid arthritis [81].…”

“…[ 74,75 ] Other reports also evidenced that B‐containing NPs are non‐cytotoxic up to very high concentrations (40 mg mL −1 ). [ 76 ] The presence of stabilization agents significantly influences the cytotoxicity of NPs, [ 77 ] including Fe oxide NPs, [ 75 ] but the amount of organic stabilizers in the Fe–B NPs is such to avoid negative effects on cell viability. [ 77 ]…”
