Abstract: Purpose. Surgical procedures are likely to be stressful for patients and their families. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a major surgical procedure used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. During this procedure the sounds of the saw and hammer may irritate the patient and adversely affect mood. The present study examines the effect of these intraoperative sounds during TKA on postoperative mood and anxiety, by comparing two different anesthetic procedures. Methods. “…In a study examining patient experiences during hip surgery, it was found hearing the sounds of saw and hammer during surgery increased the patients' anxiety levels (Mauleon, Palo‐Bengtsson, & Ekman, ). In contrast, another study reported that despite hearing similar sounds during knee replacement surgery, the patients were not negatively affected, and their anxiety level did not increase (Kömürcü et al, ). In the current study, intraoperative sounds were observed as a subtheme of the theme, “it was like an adventure”, and the most common statement of the participants was “are you preparing for construction?”.…”

“…As a safe, easy‐to‐apply, low‐cost, non‐fasting method that provides good muscle relaxation and does not cause unconsciousness, spinal anesthesia is frequently used in perineal, abdominal, and gynecological surgery (Valsamis, Wade, Thornhill, Carey, & Ricketts, ). However, it also has certain disadvantages, such as the patients' fearing that they will lose control of their extremities and hearing the surgical team's conversations and the sounds of the devices in the operating room due to their conscious state (Kent et al, ; Kömürcü et al, ).…”

“…() that some patients have a degree of awareness whilst under sedation intraoperatively, as participants reported listening to music during surgery. This suggests there is the potential for patients who did not listen to music to have been exposed to an environment that has been reported to induce intraoperative anxiety (Kömürcü et al., ; Maeyama, Kodaka, & Miyao, ). Sarkar et al.…”
