Abstract: Carvacrol (CVC) is a phenolic monoterpene present in many essential oils of medicinal and aromatic plants and has attracted attention because of its beneficial biological activities. To date, although various biological activities of CVC have been demonstrated, its neurotoxicity on cultured primary rat neurons and N2a neuroblastoma cells has never been explored. Therefore, in this present study, we aimed to describe in vitro antiproliferative and/or cytotoxic properties (by 3-(4,5 dimetylthiazol -2-yl)-2,5 dip… Show more

“…This was verified in more recent work where HepG2 cells were treated with carvacrol for 24 h (30). Carvacrol has been tested against MDA-MB 231 (human metastatic breast cancer cells) (31), P-815 (murine mastocytoma), K-562 (human chronic myelolytic leukemia), CEM (acute T-lymphoblastoid Fitsiou et al: Bioactivities of Satureja Oils and Components leukemia), MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) and its counterpart resistant to gemcitabine (MCF-7 gem) (32,33), human cervical cancer HeLa and SiHa cells (34), CEM leiomyosarcoma cells (35), B16-F10 murine melanoma cells and rat brain N2a neuroblastoma cells (36), exhibiting moderate to strong antiproliferative activity.…”

“…CAR has been qualified as natural antioxidants due to its ability to reduce free radical formation and scavenge free radicals (Karioti et al 2006). However, much of its antioxidant properties have been demonstrated in experimental in vitro systems (Aydin et al 2014). Carvacrol decreases peroxidation of phospholipid liposomes and is found to be a good scavenger of peroxyl radicals in the b-carotene bleaching (BCB) test and in DPPH and TBARS assays (Aeschbach et al 1994;Kulisic et al 2004).…”

“…After incubation with compounds for 24 h, MTT solution (final amount 10 lL) was added to each well and re-incubated for 4 h at 37°C. After washing, the blue formazan was extracted from the cells with isopropanol/formic acid (95:5) and was photometrically determined at 560 nm (Lewerenz et al 2003;Turkez et al 2012b;Aydın et al 2014). …”
