“…In cardiac surgery in particular, high levels of S-100ß are present in the blood drained from the mediastinum by cardiotomy suction reflecting the presence of S-100ß in mediastinal fat cells. 6 Much less S-100ß is recovered if this blood is passed through a cell-saver. 7 The implications of this are that blood retransfused from the cardiotomy or from mediastinal drains will artificially elevate serum S-100ß levels -a common observation in the early hours following CPB as seen in Kanbak et al's study and not indicative necessarily of increased brain injury.…”
