The Effect of Biostimulant and Fertilizer on “Low Input” Lettuce Production

Abstract: -Lettuce production in the winter on the Adriatic coast, especially in a non-heated plastic tunnel, requires longer cultivation and is characterised by lower head mass and yield. In these conditions, the effect of biostimulant Bio-algeen S-90 and fertilizer Megagreen on the production of the traditional winter lettuce cultivar 'Four Seasons' was tested. Both treatments showed a positive effect on the growth and total yield of winter lettuce, and decreased the share of non-marketable yield. Bio-algeen S-90 trea… Show more

“…Dudaš et al. () stated that lettuce production in winter on the Adriatic coast, especially in nonheated plastic tunnels, requires longer cultivation and is characterized by lower head mass and yield. The main barriers for lettuce cultivation in this area are heat and water shortage in summer and the deficiency of light and frost incidence in winter.…”

“…Considering the increased market demands for higher availability of food products of enhanced nutritional quality, the use of biostimulants has been suggested as an eco-friendly practice for crop production under non-optimal conditions (abiotic stress conditions) to retain high yields without compromising the quality of the final product [13,23,27,28]. Special attention was given to research on leafy vegetables since they are more prone than other horticultural crops to abiotic stressors and drought, thermal, nutrient, and salinity stress in particular [4,19,24,27,29,30]. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) is a leafy vegetable crop which is widely cultivated throughout the Mediterranean basin in open-field and protected conditions.…”

“…inoculation (Fiorentino et al, 2018). Experiment with a natural algae extract showed higher vitamin C content in butterhead lettuce grown in the non-heated plastic tunnel (Dudaš et al, 2016). In the control treatment, the highest vitamin C content was measured in autumn (short day).…”
