The Economics of Kidney Transplantation versus Hemodialysis

Abstract: Using 1998 data for 8 transplantation centers located in New York City, this study found that kidney transplantation was a more cost-effective treatment than hemodialysis for the Medicare program. The initially higher costs of transplantation were fully recouped by Medicare 2 years and 10 months after surgery. For persons who are eligible for Medicare solely due to their end-stage renal disease status, transplantation would generate average monthly savings of $3800 over dialysis for the 2 years following the b… Show more

“…From an economic perspective, transplantation has been shown to be less expensive than maintenance dialysis (32–35). Most studies suggest that transplantation is more cost effective than dialysis following the first year after transplant and the cost savings increase progressively as long as the graft survives.…”

“…[13] KT also confers benefits to society because it incurs less health care expenditure compared with dialysis. [4] However, KT may not be suitable for every candidate, [5] and progressing from the ESRD diagnosis through dialysis to referral to evaluation, wait-listing, and transplantation requires the efforts of both physicians and patients. This complex process may discourage some patients from initiating it.…”

“…[2,3] Kidney transplantation (KT) is the best treatment for patients with ESRD in terms of increasing the survival rate, reducing complications, and improving quality of life. [46] The degree of clinical benefit associated with KT has recently become important. [7] In Asia, however, there are insufficient data regarding KT and dialysis outcomes.…”
