The Diagnosis of Pleural Tumors Other Than Mesothelioma

Abstract: - A wide variety of tumors can involve the pleura. In most cases, the approach of considering the morphologic features with appropriate immunohistochemistry, in the correct clinical context, allows for a confident diagnosis. For a number of those soft tissue tumors that are well recognized in the pleura, such as solitary fibrous tumor, desmoid-type fibromatosis, synovial sarcoma, and epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, novel markers now exist based on an understanding of the individual tumors' molecular characte… Show more

“…According to some authors, even benign PSFT can be unpredictable (10-15% of cases), especially if the size of the tumor is larger than 10 cm and has infiltrated the pleural margins [7]. This is the reason why in the case of our patients, tumor resection was done with oncological margins of 2 cm and in association with histopathological examination from pleural margins (37 cases, 82.22%).…”

“…Imaging studies can rarely distinguish the primary lesion from a metastatic lesion [ 1 , 7 ]. Our primary mass has an obtuse margin with the chest wall, nodularity of the pleura, and local lymphadenopathy.…”

“…Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare aggressive tumor-family of pleura and lung, with an incidence of about 0.002% [ 1 , 2 ]. In most of the cases, MMs are located in pleural mesothelium, and only rarely in peritoneal cavities, tunica vaginalis or pericardium.…”
