The Development of the Transactive Relationship Theory of Nursing (TRETON): A Nursing Engagement Model for Persons and Humanoid Nursing Robots

Abstract: Background: Precise nursing actions assure quality human health care. However, such actions are often identified as low-level health care work thereby delegated as tasks that only need completion. With the Japanese elderly population increasing at a phenomenal rate, these types of nursing actions are critically demanded. As a health care practice problem leading to labor shortages in health care settings specifically among nurses and direct health caregivers, Japan has made a national commitment focused on dev… Show more

“…Depending on the sophisticated level of AI, these healthcare robots (8) are visually life -like, possess capabilities which are like humans, and performs tasks much like humans can and do as these are programmed to do. As of April 2016, Smashing Robotics (9) have identified thirteen available assortments of humanoid robots which are for sale, and the most advanced and expensive at the cost of $2,500,000.00 is the Asimo that was developed by Honda Robotics.…”

“…The The realization of human and intelligent machine transactions in human health care has been the impetus for the development of the Transactive Relationship Theory of Nursing (TRETON) [40]. As the demands and needs for quality health care rise, particularly in human-resource poor environments and among the older adult population, the utilization of human-machine process requirements are intensified, and the realities and consequences of transactive relationships have become integral to assuring quality human health care.…”

“…The Transactive Relationship Theory of Nursing (TRETON) [16] [17] [18] explains the engagement processes that are characteristic activities among older adults with dementia, the nurse as mediator, and the communication robot. This theory explains the mutual engagement and the technological engagement that transpires among them.…”

“…However, the hope is, if this function for robots is developed well, the conversation between the elderly and the communication robot will be much smoother and characteristic transactive relationships can be easily identified, organized and used to enhance programming of future humanoid nurse robots [16] [17] [18].…”
