Abstract. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a revolution of technology and a process that transformed the way building is planned, designed, analysed, constructed and managed. The revolution of technology and process could increase the quality of construction projects. The knowledge of BIM has been expanding in many countries including Malaysia. Since its inception, the use of BIM has broadened up widely with different purposes. The aims of this paper is to investigate the BIM implementation and uses in Malaysian construction projects. The methodologies adopted for structuring this paper are by using literature review and semi-structured interview with construction players that have experienced and being involved in projects using BIM. The purpose of literature review is to illustrate on the pervious research on the subject matter. Meanwhile, the purpose of interviews is to explore the involvement of construction players, years of experience in projects using BIM and BIM uses in construction projects. The findings revealed that BIM has been implemented in Malaysia since 2007 by various construction players, which are client, architect, C&S engineer, M&E engineer, QS, contractor, facilities manager and BIM consultant. The findings also revealed that BIM is used for project' visualisation, improving project design, detecting design clashes, quantity take off and operation and maintenance. Further work will be focused on the current practices of construction players in projects using BIM.

Using BIM and Virtual Wind Tunnel To Investigate Wind Induced Loads On Steel Agriculture Buildings

Agriculture buildings have their own features due to the relatively complex system with large openings for adequate ventilation. This study aims to deal with these special aspects of the agricultural buildings via simulation. Empirical wind force distributions that have been developed from wind tunnels to be used for traditional buildings may be inapplicable for the agricultural buildings. This study presents a competitive solution based on the virtual wind tunnel technique. Different buildings with different aspect ratios have been simulated in the Revit environment to mimic their structures, claddings, and openings for doors and windows. These models have been exported to the Robot software where the underneath soils have been modeled and virtual wind simulations have been achieved. Results have been presented in normalized forms that clearly distinguish between the opening effects on the global and local behaviors of buildings under the wind induced forces. Keywords: Building information modeling (BIM); finite element, soil simulation RESUMEN/ Los edificios agrícolas tienen sus propias características debido al sistema relativamente complejo con grandes aberturas para una ventilación adecuada. Este estudio tiene como objetivo tratar estos aspectos especiales de los edificios agrícolas a través de la simulación. Las distribuciones empíricas de la fuerza del viento que se han desarrollado a partir de túneles de viento para ser utilizados en edificios tradicionales pueden ser inaplicables para los edificios agrícolas. Este estudio presenta una solución competitiva basada en la técnica de túnel de viento virtual. Se han simulado diferentes edificios con diferentes relaciones de aspecto en el entorno de Revit para imitar sus estructuras, revestimientos y aberturas para puertas y ventanas. Estos modelos se han exportado al software Robot donde se han modelado los suelos debajo y se han logrado simulaciones de viento virtuales. Los resultados se han presentado en formas normalizadas que distinguen claramente entre los efectos de apertura en el comportamiento global y local de los edificios bajo las fuerzas inducidas por el viento. Abstract. Building Information Modelling (BIM) concept has expanded widely in many countries for more than a decade with its role of improving current practices in construction projects. However, the understanding of BIM differs among construction players, depending on how construction players utilize the concept in their projects. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the understanding of BIM concept among construction players in the Malaysian construction industry. A literature review on BIM concept and semi-structured interviews with construction players in BIM such as client, civil and structural (C&S) engineer and mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineer, quantity surveyor (QS), contractor, facilities manager and BIM consultant have been conducted in order to achieve this study's the aim. The results show that the understanding of BIM concept among the construction players is limited to BIM as a process and technology. It is important for the construction players to improve their understanding of BIM as it can be used to enhance performance and productivity of construction projects.
